Personal Ad Guidelines

Online dating has never been easier but with it comes responsibilities for the advertiser to ensure that it is an enjoyable experience.

Stick to the few simple rules and you should have no problems.

When writing your advert there are some do's and don'ts you should follow.

Firstly, assuming the site you are registering with even allows it, do not put your email address or telephone number into your advert. Doing this opens the door to all sorts of unscrupulous people who you might never get rid of.

Avoid repeating information which you have already given when registering. For example, it is pointless to state your age if the site registration has asked for your date of birth. Chances are, if the dating service has asked for your date of birth, it will be shown on your profile and the dating service can even work out which star sign you are. Besides, stating your age in your advert means that you have to come back and edit your ad as you get older. Similar comments could be made about your height, eye colour, religion etc. All of this information is usually searchable anyway.

Remember that people make decisions very quickly. So the first few lines of your advert and the title must do the work of attracting someone. It's very like when you see someone in a room for the first time. Subconciously you make the decision that you find them physically attractive within the first few seconds of seeing them.

Things you might like to include in your advert after the opening pitch might be something about your hobbies and pastimes or your sense of humour. Don't forget to say what it is your are looking for in the other person too.

Please avoid using all UPPERCASE letters. On the internet this is regarded as shouting. At best it tells your readers you don't know where the caps lock key is on your keyboard. Mixed case text is far easier to read.

Your photo is all important too. Superficial though it may seem many people will not respond to an advert which does not have an accompanying picture. They are not on the site for a blind date. And be careful about which photo you select. Photos are limited in size and it is important that it only contains you. Trim off any excess white space around the photo - this is all to easily overlooked and results in the important part of the photo being too small.

Warning: Autoresponders

If someone immediately provides you with an email address it most likely means one of two things. They are just naive enough not to understand what problems this will cause OR they are trying to get you onto an autoresponder.

An autoresponder is, as its name suggests, a piece of software which automatically sends out email messages back to you after you have first contacted it. Autoresponders may be used for a number of purposes. Firstly, to harvest your email address so that it can be included in junk mail lists or secondly to lead you up the garden path, eventually trying to get you to send money for some obscure reason.

Autoresponders which are attempting to get money from you are fairly easy to recognise. Invariably they ignore any questions you may ask.

Guys. Don't be fooled. Often this starts as a contact email from a very pretty young girl. These people often target the older male who is flattered by the 'contact' but to embarrased to admit it when they get conned.
